Our First Responders and military service personnel have one of the most mentally, physically, and emotionally demanding careers. These individuals are faced with unknowns every day. Their self-sacrificing dedication and demanding work schedules ultimately result in missed time with family, sporting events, holidays, etc. These brave men and women courageously face dangerous situations, risking their own lives to make a difference to strangers in their time of need.

On January 24th, 2022, Lieutenant Kelsey Sadler, a Baltimore City Fire Fighter, was killed in the line of duty. Crews were dispatched to a fire-rescue box with reports of people trapped. Within minutes of battling the fire, the building collapsed killing Kelsey, two other firefighters and seriously injuring another. Kelsey was a 16-year veteran with the Baltimore City Fire Department and was known for being fierce and brave. She was truly the real deal and became the first female to assume the First Acting position in 14 Engine’s history. As her reputation preceded her, she was posthumously promoted to the rank of Fire Lieutenant.

During the course of days following this unexpected loss, Kelsey's friends and family had to lean on each other for support. Provided at the funeral services, emotional support dogs were available to comfort anyone attending while they honored the life of Kelsey and her colleagues. The quiet and calm presence of a chocolate lab gave her family the most comfort. It was no coincidence the therapy dog assigned to the Sadler family was a chocolate lab. Kelsey's most beloved four legged companion Shana, was also a chocolate lab. Her family took this as a sign to always remember just how special and comforting dogs can be especially during the most difficult times.

Kelsey LOVED animals, especially dogs. At work, colleagues would even bring stray animals to her station because she was the “dog lady”. As family thought of a way to honor Kelsey and continue her legacy, this nonprofit Foundation was created. Salty Dog will provide financial contributions for emotional support & service dogs for our first responders, active military members and veterans. Salty Dog will be a way for Kelsey to continue shining her bright light to the heroes who sacrifice so much for their communities.
